Imagine if hundreds of years from now, scientists excavated the abandoned ruins of some of our largest cities, what conclusions would they come to? It happened to the Romans, the Anasazi, and the Mayans and, inevitably, one day our own modern civilization will also fall. In this two hour special discover how a future civilization might be baffled as to why the population of these once-great cities would suddenly abandon their technology and architecture, and turn their homes into ghost towns.
Some experts believe that there is a very real risk this could happen, and the collapse of the world as we know it is closer than we think. Examining the parallels between cultures separated by hundreds of years, explore whether the key to preventing such a global collapse today could lie in finding renewable alternatives to our dwindling energy supplies and sustainable resources. Can we learn from the mistakes of the past before it’s too late?

As a mechanical engineer with a concentration in green energy, I can tell you this documentary got the potential of alternative energy completely wrong.
Joseph Tainter has a Ph.D in anthropology and James Howard Kunstler is an author. I don’t think they has the authority to talk about this kind of stuff. Leave the engineering to the engineers and stop talking about stuff you don’t know. They’re clearly not smart enough to be engineers that’s why one studies humanity and the other writes books.
Wind energy if harnessed in only 3 of 50 states can power the US.
The Sun provides Earth with more energy in an hour than the entire planet consumes in a year. These people did not do their research…
Yes exactly to the above poster. That’s correct, these authors are only showing you limited information. They also forget to mention geothermal which is far more powerful as a source of energy than all the other sources combined! Sun, wind, tidal, and wave energy are dwarfed to the power of renewal energy from the earth’s planet itself. Don’t appreciate being misinformed by this documentary. It should be removed in my opinion.
Right, they really don’t know enough.
What is more funny is that they avoid the flaws of the monetary system itself.
This documentary is primarily about water consumption and dealing with future drought. Just because certain classifications aren’t met does not mean that they didn’t do research or consult with other professionals in the making of this documentary. Regardless of advancement in green energy technology, the issue of water consumption and waste is still on the table. Think about how much water it takes to run a geo-thermal power plant. Communities such as those in Arizona and New Mexico can still fall prey to drought regardless of the amount of energy that is available.
