Starsuckers is one of the most controversial documentary films of the year, and was released in British cinemas in November 2009 to critical acclaim. It’s a darkly humourous and shocking exposé of the celebrity obsessed media, that uncovers the real reasons behind our addiction to fame and blows the lid on the corporations and individuals who profit from it. Directed by Chris Atkins, BAFTA nominated for Taking Liberties, Starsuckers exploded into the news in October when it emerged that the team had been selling fake celebrity stories to all the British Tabloids. This became a news sensation in it’s own right, and was followed by the darker revelation that Atkins had secretly filmed four journalists for three Sunday tabloids trying to buy medical records. The filmmakers also stung Max Clifford, who the film shows boasting about his clients on undercover camera. When Clifford found out, he hired the infamous law firm Carter Ruck and threatened to injunct the film which would have prevented it’s release. The film ends with a damning critique of Bob Geldof’s Live Aid and the star-studded Live 8 concerts in 2005.

God, I couldn’t even finished watching this movie. Don’t get me wrong it wasn’t a bad film. It’s just sickening to watch this whole celebrity, fame obsession. Television rots your mind.
Glad you commented… now I don’t have to watch it and get pissed off by the celebrity cult worship.
i was worried that it’d be all shots of celebs etc but it turned out to be an interesting exploration into why and how its all set up without us even being aware, we’re being played.
a helpful doco in regards to base info you can explain to others that dont understand why you dont read the tabloids etc.
Ever wondered why people go mad for celeb’ gossip? All the answers and more, well worth watching!
i WATCHED THIS COS tAKING lIBERTIES WAS SUCH AN INCREDIBLE FILM (i DID RECOMMEND IT FOR tRUTHTHEORY) BUT ALSO COS THE OTHER DAY THE QUESTION OF FAME TO CHILDREN CAME UP AT WORK. a FRIEND WORKS IN A SCHOOL AND WHEN, ONCE UPON A TIME, WHEN KIDS WERE ASKED WHAT THEY WANTED TO BE WHEN THEY GREW UP, INSTEAD OF FIREMAN, ASTRONAUT, DOCTOR, THE KIDS SAID SINGER, ON TV and oR EASTENDERS….ITS BECOMING A NIGHTMARE WORTHY OF dOUGLAS aDAMS!
its a sad state of affairs. We do live in a celebrity driven culture, but i don’t think its just because of fame, a lot of people probably push their kids into it, so their kids don’t have to struggle in life like they did. They think its a better lifestyle, I’m not making excuses. I just think people are products of their environment. Make poverty history, feed your mind. Check out the venus project & keep an open mind…
